The Beast Emerges with Beauty at Gala Premiere! Sunway Lagoon premieres fifth musical production with live musicians.

True as it can be, the tale as old as time finally premiered at the Amphitheatre @ Sunway Lagoon. Beauty and the Beast, the musical is Sunway Lagoon’s fifth musical so far and it will be performing at the Amphitheatre from now until December 31st, 2012.
With RM4.5 million invested into the musical, Beauty and the Beast will be the first musical at Sunway Lagoon to feature live musicians. Hailing from Philippines, the musicians will be performing under the direction of much celebrated musical director and conductor, David Laugharne, who has been credited in many West End productions.

“As Sunway Lagoon gears up to celebrate our 20 Fun Years, we are proud that we can continually provide guests with memorable experiences. Our musicals have always been a magical and collaborative effort between international and local talents. Beauty and the Beast is going to be one of the most unique musicals at Sunway Lagoon to date. We will be featuring live musicians to play the musical score at every show for the first time ever,” said HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Shopping Malls & Theme Parks.

Beauty and the Beast tells an evergreen tale where true love prevails against all odds. Set in provincial France, a handsome but superficial prince is turned into a grotesque beast by a witch after he refused to offer her shelter. The witch gives him a mystical rose to which his curse is bound. If he is unable to love and be loved in return before the last petal falls from the rose, he is doomed to live the rest of his days as a beast.

When Belle, beautiful and witty village girl crosses path with the Beast, will she be able to love him for who he is before he runs out of petals on his mystical rose? For those who grew up with this classic story will find that Beauty and the Beast at Sunway Lagoon will invoke some of the warmest memories and cherished feelings unique to a fairy tale ending.
Beauty and the Beast is directed by Chris Colby and choreographed by David Kort. These theatre veterans from London’s West End have brought the most dazzling musicals to stages across Europe and Asia. Both Chris and David also led the productions of Peter Pan the Musical, Magical Musicals, Aladdin the Musical, London the Summer Musical, The Adventures of Captain Quack and London Boys at Sunway Lagoon.

“This is a very exciting time for us who have seen the evolution of musicals at Sunway Lagoon. Not only do we have massive talent in stage and production, we will make musical history at Sunway Lagoon with Beauty and the Beast. Having live musicians under the direction of David Laugharne, one of the best musical directors that West End has to offer is unprecedented and very exciting,” said Chris Colby.
David Laugharne is a familiar name across London’s West End. He has lent his musical talents in productions like Miss Saigon, Avenue Q, The Lion King and Legally Blonde. He also led the National Symphony Chamber Orchestra in the United Kingdom as conductor to their joint concert tour with world famous Soprano vocalist, Hayley Westenra.

David will lead a band of eight musicians who will perform the accompaniment score of Beauty and the Beast at Sunway Lagoon.
