Bringing the ‘Kaitiakitanga’ Core Value to Life - Comvita Malaysia Pledges to Donate 15% of Online Sales to FreeMakan

The world’s #1 UMF™-certified manuka honey company from New Zealand, Comvita Malaysia, has kickstarted a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme to help fight the hunger crisis within Malaysia’s under-resourced community. Other than donating RM10,000 to FreeMakan, Comvita Malaysia has pledged to channel 15% of its online sales between 25 July to 14 August 2021 to the same charitable movement as well.

Comvita Malaysia wants to support and help those whose livelihoods were severely affected during these difficult pandemic moments. We had initially contributed RM10,000 as a donation to FreeMakan in hope to feed these communities, but we realised that more must be done to help,” said Rommel Irwan, Comvita Head of Southeast Asia. Rommel explained that one of Comvita’s core values is ‘Kaitiakitanga’, which is a New Zealand native term based on Māori world views that include conservation, replenishment, and sustainability of the environment. “At Comvita, we act on behalf of future generations and are committed to protect the delicate balance of our ecosystems. It is our belief that social, environmental and economic prosperity are intertwined, and hence we felt strongly in giving back and supporting the communities in need.”
“Our partnership with FreeMakan will see us working together to do more for the communities. We are appealing to Malaysians to help make a difference by purchasing our products online between 25 July to 14 August 2021, so we can channel 15% of all sales during this period to FreeMakan,” Rommel said. FreeMakan is a BAC Food Bank Initiative. BAC Food Bank representative, Moo Tik Pin, said that FreeMakan was launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to eradicate food poverty in Malaysia through provision of dry rations and cooked food to people struggling with hunger and food insecurity. To date, the initiative has successfully raised over RM200,000 and provided provisions to over 4,000 families from the B40 and other marginalised communities as far as Kuala Selangor, Jeram and Banting.
“We are grateful to Comvita Malaysia for the help and support in working together to bring awareness to the nation about the hunger crisis in Malaysia. We hope to encourage more Malaysians to step up their efforts to help the poor, homeless and unemployed, especially during this pandemic,” said Moo.
