McDonald’s Malaysia Contributed RM600,000 Business Zakat to Selangor Zakat Board

The Business Zakat is a religious obligation to donate a certain portion of wealth of a business each year to charitable causes. This year, McDonald’s Malaysia has contributed the highest amount of Business Zakat to Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) since the organisation started paying their Business Zakat 6 years ago, since the company was taken over by Lionhorn Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary under from Reza Group based in Saudi Arabia.
The RM600,000 of Business Zakat was presented on 28 March 2022, along with Zakat charity in the form of RM500 cash and vouchers to 50 selected families who were severely affected by the flood recently.
McDonald’s Malaysia held an event in conjunction with the presentation of Business Zakat at McDonald’s Banting DT outlet on 28 March 2022. It was attended by YBhg. Dato’ Seri Utama Diraja Mufti Selangor, Sahibus Samahah Dato’ Dr. Haji Anhar Bin Haji Opir, whom has witnessed the presentation of the Business Zakat, from Encik Azhar Darbi, Vice President of Human Resources and Chairman of the Internal Halal Committee, McDonald’s Malaysia, to Encik Mohd Sabirin bin Mohd Sarbini, Head of Distribution Division, Zakat Board.

“Giving back to the community is the core value of McDonald’s Malaysia, including through corporate social responsibility and Zakat contribution. Hence, we have contributed a value of RM600,000 to help the community that are in-need. Especially for those who were severely affected by the recent flood in the area of Banting, Selangor.” Encik Azhar Darbi, Vice President of Human Resources and Chairman of the Internal Halal Committee, McDonald’s Malaysia shared during the event.
As of 2021, McDonald’s Malaysia has contributed a total of RM9.85 million in Business Zakat to all states of Malaysia.

Mr. Muhd Fikri Naim bin Harun, Head of Collection Division, Selangor Zakat Board said: “LZS is grateful for all the businesses out there that have contributed their Business Zakat, and hope that they will continue to do so, jfor the benefit of the people of Selangor, just like McDonald’s Malaysia. It will greatly help those in need, especially those who are affected by the current economic situation.”

McDonald’s Malaysia was taken over by Lionhorn Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary under Reza Group based in Saudi Arabia on 1 December 2016. With this acquisition, the company is now owned by shareholders and investors the majority of whom are Muslims.

Besides contributing Business Zakat, McDonald’s Malaysia also works closely with Jabatan Kemajuan Agama Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) to ensure it’s commitment to HALAL. Not only that, McDonald’s Malaysia has also actively joined various HALAL related programmes such as Pameran Halal Antarabangsa Malaysia (MIHAS), HALFEST and World Halal Conference.
